THE coronavirus has killed hundreds of people and infected more than 24,000 since being discovered in Wuhan, China last month. Here’s how you can protect yourself from the deadly virus – do N95 masks work?

Two patients in England have tested positive for coronavirus, it was confirmed last week. 

If more cases are confirmed in the UK, it will be announced as soon as possible by the Chief Medical Officer of the affected country.

Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty said in a statement: “We can confirm that two patients in England, who are members of the same family, have tested positive for coronavirus.

“The patients are receiving specialist NHS care, and we are using tried and tested infection control procedures to prevent further spread of the virus.

“The NHS is extremely well-prepared and used to managing infections and we are already working rapidly to identify any contacts the patients had, to prevent further spread.

“We have been preparing for UK cases of novel coronavirus and we have robust infection control measures in place to respond immediately.

“We are continuing to work closely with the World Health Organization and the international community as the outbreak in China develops to ensure we are ready for all eventualities.

Do N95 masks work?

People wearing disposable face masks have become a defining image of the coronavirus outbreak.

Experts say masks can be helpful in preventing the spread of the virus, but only if worn properly and under the right conditions.

However, if it’s a regular surgical face mask, the answer is “no” Dr William Schaffner, who is an infectious-disease specialist at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee, told Live Science.

A more specialised mask, known as an N95 respirator, can protect against the new coronavirus because it is thicker than a surgical mask.
